Description
The Astoria-Megler bridge was opened in 1966 and connects western Washinging and Oregon by crossing the Columbia River. If it weren't for this bridge, drivers would have to go 50 miles east for another way across. There is a ferry closer, but those aren't quite as convenient.
This bridge dominiates the landscape in Astoria, as it has a clearance of 196 feet at high tide to allow for cargo ships to pass underneath. You can see it just about everywhere in town.
I seem to be fascinated with this bridge. It appears in several of my works.
The flowers in the foreground are foxglove (I think). They're poisonous. I've watched way too many crime shows.
