Description
The USS Constitution, the world's oldest commissioned naval warship, is still active.
It first saw service during the "Quasi-War" with France (look it up) and was used to protect American shipping from the Barbary pirates.
It is most famous for its service during the War of 1812, where, because of its unique construction, many of the cannon shots hitting the hull harmlessly bounced off. Supposedly, a sailor exclaimed "Huzzah! her sides are made of iron!" The birth of a legend.
The ship fighting Old Ironsides was the HMS Guerriere. It was destroyed.
Old Ironsides is a museum ship and is currently located at the Charlestown Navy Yard, near Boston MA.
